Ponderosa Pine (Bareroot)

(Pinus ponderosa) Named for its ponderous or heavy wood, the Ponderosa Pine also provided canoes for Lewis and Clark as they entered the Columbia River’s headwaters. Widely distributed west of the Great Plains, this sweet-scented pine is a handsome tree that averages 150 to 180 feet high. One of the best evergreen trees for windbreaks, it also provides excellent erosion control. This species attains its maximum development on relatively moist but well-drained soils but is resistant to drought on dry sites. Seeds are choice food for many species of birds, chipmunks and squirrels.
